When offshore fishing in the Osa Peninsula, the sailfish bite starts in December and heats up gradually in January until it reaches a boiling point in February and March and then settling down but still active in April.
Osa Peninsula Offshore Fishing Calendar
Blue marlin action starts in November and goes through December with spotty appearances through January and February and like sailfish, can still be caught any day of the year – just not in the same numbers as peak months. July and August welcome striped and black marlin to the Osa Peninsula billfish party.
Wahoo are not extremely prevalent in Southern Costa Rica but they have the potential to hit the spread any day of the year. This is always a nice suprise as they make great table fare and are amazing fighters
Dorado – These amazingly beautiful fish can be taken any day of the year and are most prevalent in November and December.
Tuna – Thanks to strict laws and regulations the tuna fishing in Southern Costa Rica has been red hot with the potential of 100-300 lb individuals being landed any day of the year. November through January have been the best months as of late. Catching tuna starts with finding the pods of spinner dolphins as they feed on the same bait.
Again, when fishing offshore in the Osa Peninsula it is good to remember that any of these species can be caught any day of the year, but due to their migratory nature they are more active in certain months than others. It is always improtant to talk to your captain or agent prior to your trip to make sure that you are fishing in the best months to find your target fish. Having the right expectations going into the trip makes it easier on everyone.
Quick Guide – Costa Rica Fishing Laws
- All Billfish (Sailfish, Mariln and Spearfish) are catch and release only
- Billfish may not be taken out of the water for photos
- Circle hooks must be used on all live bait
- Each angler must have a valid fishing license
Osa Peninsula Offshore Fishing Conservation
Thanks to groups like FECOP – The Costa Rica sport fishing lobby to the Costa Rican government – Harmful commercial fishing practices like seineing have been pushed way offshore greatly decreasing billfish bycatch and making Osa Peninsula Offshore fishing better for everyone.
