Osa Fishing FAQ

Some of the questions we get
How long does it take to get to Costa RIca

Costa Rica is only 2.5 hours from Miami. You just need a passport valid for 90 days after your arrival. You will fly into Costa Rica’s International Airport (Code SJO). You will then take a local flight only 45 minutes to the Osa Peninsula. You can easily get from the USA to the dock in the same day (Although most prefer to spend the first night in San Jose and travel at a more leisurely pace.

Do I need a Passport to visit Costa Rica?

Yes, passports are required to enter Costa Rica and must be valid 90 days AFTER your entry into Costa Rica. This confuses a lot of people. Please make sure you your passport is not going to expire WITHIN 90 days of your trip. They will turn you around and send you back to your country of origin.

Do I need to bring my own gear?

Although you can bring your own gear most lodges and charter boats have top of the line gear available as well as the proper line/leaders and lures that work on the species you’ll be encountering here. Do to the nature of the trip and the small baggage allowance on smaller flights we recommend not bringing your own gear.

Do I need Shots for Malaria or Dengue?

Malaria is almost non-existent in Costa Rica and Dengue is rare but you can get it. Shots/Vaccines are optional but not required in Costa Rica.

Do I need a Fishing License?

Yes, a fishing license is required for any kind of fishing in Costa Rica. Most Charter Captains and or Fishing Lodges include this in your trip cost. Please make sure you have submitted your passport information for your license so it is ready when you arrive. You can also get one online at FishCostaRica.org

Can I take fish home?

Because of tight customs and restrictions it is impossible or very difficult to have fish packed and shipped home. But, some captains have found loopholes, so make sure to ask your captain or lodge staff when you discuss your trip with them.

REMIX OF DESIGN

You have two options to get to the Osa Peninsula. You can fly (recommended) and it’s only 45 minutes from Costa Rica’s Capital City San Jose. You may also rent a car and drive down the Pacific Coast. This is an absolutely beautiful, fun drive but does take a day or two to do it comfortably. You can also visit some of Costa Rica’s marinas and or tour spots like Manuel Antonio on the way down to the Osa.
